Gearbox overhaul - not for the faint hearted? Advice please 🙏🏻
OK, so today isn’t a good day. New helmet arrived this morning and it’s too small. Then took my bike to a mechanic with years of experience on blades and who works at TT to find a fault. He took it for a test ride and confirmed fourth gear is buggered, dogs, teeth or gear fork. Gutted as the cost to repair is huge.
My options are:
1 - Sell the bike as is with the fault.
2 - Get it fixed £1500+
3 - Get my head stuck into my Haynes manual
I mechanically minded, I was a mechanical engineer in the Royal Navy.
If I decide to do this myself, do you think it’s a doable DIY job?
Best place to purchase gears in the UK (2002 CBR954)
TODAY WAS GOING SO WELL!

Haynes manual, time and patience, and you can do it. I don't know the exact parts compatibility but I saw in eBay some complete gearsets for sale, but the individual parts are not too expensive either.
There's this transmission in the USA where I am - 2nd is bad, but apparently the rest are good. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/266054147...Bk9SR-7HwNaLYg
What happens if you take the transmission shafts out and it's overwhelming? Just give it back to your mechanic - can't possibly increase the cost? Tell him "I want to try to fix this myself for ****s and giggles - if I get overwhelmed, does your quote still stand?"

It's easy to remove the clutch and oil pan to remove the shift drum, forks and shift shafts to see what's the problem before splitting the cases.

Transmissions are easy. Most helpful is Honda factory service manual for your particular model. It helped me rebuild engine when I was 17-yrs old and all I had done before was change skateboard wheels!
Do not use Haynes or Clymer manuals, they're full of errors!
