Finished Turbo Install on 954RR
Just finished turbo install on my bike. Total cost of project about $10. My friend gave me an extra turbo he had. All the rest were made from stuff I had laying around. I ran the bike for a few hours and it ran great. Wastegate is set to 5 psi and the bike is hell of fun at that setting. Boost begins around 6000 RPM and quickly ramps to 5 PSI with the throttle. Currently mapping it with my wideband unit for 13.2 AFR off boost, and 12.0 AFR on boost. So far, so good. Probably be done mapping it within a few days.
Here are some pics. Remember I built everything from scratch, and I wanted to build rough parts and test it out and then go back and build them as final pieces... so somethings arent as pretty as they could be.
Laters,
John

RE: Finished Turbo Install on 954RR
whenever you get done with the map and a dyno run I wanna see the results (HP and TQ)
I had a guy with like 10 turbos laying around his shop not too long ago I almost snatched one up for free but decided not too since I suck at riding as it is...he was cool with me taking it btw

RE: Finished Turbo Install on 954RR
The turbo I used is a TDO5-12G. They used these on vehicles like the Starion. Small footprint both turbine and compressor side. Flows around 325 cfm similiar to GT25 commonly used.Normal driving averaging 5K RPM still feels great with no adverse effects. Roll on the throttle a bit and around 6Kit starts boosting. From that point on its an entirely different beast. At 5 PSI I was able to bring up the front wheel in 4th gear.
Anybody want to try it themselves let me know and I can give you some pointers that will save you huge amounts of time. I fab a lot of stuff forbikes and offroad vehicles, so I have a bit more materials than the norm, i.e. aluminum, tig welder. So ifyou need help with those parts I can help ya out.
pimpncbr: Make you a deal... Go to ebay and do a search for a GT28 Turbo. You will find a few Garretts for @ $1000 and some generics (knock-offs) for about $450. You get me one of the new GT28's for $450, and I will build you a kit.As far as the swingarms, my 12" extended one has gone bye bye due to a van driving over it at a stop light. So now Iam using a 6" extended one I actually like better. I'm gonna use it for a few weeks then if you want it just trade mea swingarm, and you can have it. I'll post a picture of it on the bike soon. I tookit off to do some canyon runs, butI am gonna put it back on with this turbo.
bobjoe: I forgot about the pump I needed to drain the oil from the turbo for $75. So I would say $100 came out of pocket not including what I had on- hand already. I would guess somewhere around $500-$600 for parts and materials including the turbo if I had to buy everything.
Did a prelim run on a cheapy Dyno to get a baseline to start my mapping and it did @ 195 HP with a 4th gear Roll-on. I forget the torque amount. But I know it was high because when it reached max boost the rear tire kept losing traction on the dyno. Actually scared the **** out of me to be honest. I am figuring about 220 HP after the tuning keeping it at 5 psi. Anymore than 5 psi and I will definitely need to add secondary fuel system. As it is I am pushing the stock injectors up to 25% over in many boosted map points. I believe the stock injectors can handle up to 30% over, so I'm kinda close to their limits.
