Engine work!?
 

I blew out the second gear on my 02 954 and now that i took the engine out of the bike and split the case i am wondering should i change the crankshaft bearing and the piston rings??? the bike has 34000 miles on it. Or should i just leave it alone? The engine runs strong does not have any hiccups and does not eat up oil....

Not sure where you live, but if its to cold to ride, and you already have it out, might be a good idea, and if you can do it all yourself even better, because in 5 - 10k miles if you have problems and its nice out, you dont want to do it then, i could say if you can do it all yourself, give it a once over and freshin it up

Thats what i was thinking just to freshin it up and not to worry about it later down the road.... Most of the work i can do my self but when it come to crank berings and piston rings ill have to give it to some one who knows what they are doing....

How did 2nd gear blow out?

well, changing out the tranny is easy and doesn't require messing with the the engine part of the motor at all really. however, since you've split the case, you might as well take the timing chain off and do all the bearings - as 34k miles is quite a few. i would NOT mess with the rings. first, you'd have to slightly hone/hatch the walls (which doesn't really work with the nikasil lining as it would with a standard motor block) , and it'd require you to take off the head - which you do NOT need to do if you want to change the bearings. and not taking off the head saves you a head gasket. just be sure that you really take your time with the rods and don't twist the rods while loosing the bottom ends or pushing out the old bearings or putting the new ones in - and you should be fine


any pics of what when wrong? was it a shift drum issue? are the dogs just worn down? i took apart one motor that had a few dogs disintegrated.

and the bearings are easy. you just thumb them out of their grooves. you match the letters on the crankcase and crank shaft to get your main bearings. and you match the crank case with the rods for your rod bearings. it's really simple. all you need to do is read the section in the manual. if you got the thing split, you have enough talent to get the bearings changed around. save your old stretch bolts to plasitguage your bearing clearance. good luck

Thank you! your info helped me out alot with what to do now.... ill try to change the bearing my self but ill leave rings along since its over my head... And when it come to the tranny its not that bad just have to get a new 2nd gear and shift fork and ill be go to go... and here is a pic how the 2nd gear looks like...
