Default Engine noise (again)

Dear group,

While googling for possible causes of engine tick/rattle, I came across this video on a different forum. My newly acquired 2002 954 makes exactly the same noise so I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on what could be the cause. Mine only has 25k km on the clock and all services done so I doubt it is cct or valve clearances. And noise clearly comes from the top left side of the engine. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the response. However, when looking at the service log I see it had valve adjustment done about 1000 km ago, so I doubt that is the issue..

Unless you know for a fact that the valve job was done correctly, the service log is not of much value. I agree the noise in the video does sound like valves. Checking for proper clearances isn't a tough job to do.

I don't know that 100% of course, since I didn't do it myself, but there is a stamp and signature in the book from an authorized Honda dealer. But thanks for the feedback - I guess the thing to do is to take it to my local shop and have them listen.

Could also be beginning of rod-knock, but those tend to have deeper sound.

Compression/leakdown test should be next.

Thanks, will have a comp test done, and also check the header gaskets - supposedly leaks here can also cause a ticking sound. Thanks for your input.
