DIY smoke machine

I saw this on another forum and thought it was a great idea. 1 quart paint can and some air fittings is all you need. An air compressor with regulator helps. I was trying to check the header gaskets for leaks. Didn't see any smoke coming out at the header gaskets, but the gasket that joins the pipes under the bike was pouring out smoke. Next I'm going to try it on the vacuum lines.

So how are you creating the smoke? CBRClassic is always blowing smoke in the world down-under,
but, all of us folks in the US don't have a good source here. Unless you count Nate, but he's just not reliable. lol

I sprayed a piece of an old bath towel with wd40 and lit it on fire. let if burn for 30 seconds or so then dropped it in the can. Be careful lighting a wd40 soaked rag, cause it burns like napalm! I'd only use a 100% cotton rag.

I'm open to suggestion on what to use for smoke. The rag smoked for a good 5 minutes or more. Some people have used cheap fog machines, which basically heat up oil to make smoke, but I was to cheap for that.

I forgot to mention that I used jb weld to seal the fitting in the can lid. I drilled two 1/2 inch holes, which were perfect for the 3/8 inch pipe fittings. I could have just screwed the quick connect fitting directly into the can, but I wanted to be able to get it out.

You don't even need a barb fitting. You could just jbweld some scrap pipe in there. I'm only running about 1-5 psi through the can.

I had everything, but the empty paint can, which costs me $2.49 at lowes. Even with the cost of the tubing and pipe fittings, it's under $10. That's a far cry from $600-$1000 for a professional smoke machine.

So where did you fire the smoke into the bike?

And can you also use it on trout or salmon?

I just stuck the hose in the exhaust pipe and taped it up. Next I'm going to attach it to a vacuum line and block off the throttle bodies somehow.

Question. Would the exhaust valve completely block the smoke from making it's way up to the headers? Does it seal tight like a throttle body butterfly?

Wd 40 is dangerous

Burn a bunch of your old hooters, then throw then in the can. Make sure you hook up to any good vacuum line. Invite your friends over; very important, make sure to close the door to the garage, and all of your friends will claim to know where the leak is. Be carefull, make sure to write what you are doing, in LARGE LETTERS, on the wall because you may forget what your intentions were. You can use old cigarettes, but then your garage will smell like old white trash.
