How did it come out? I was looking at a bike that had a 4th gear issue but it would go into gear sometimes. Just wondering what your symptoms were. Thanks.

I have been this route. As far as the 929 gears go, I don't know. I have run into different number of dogs on the side of the gears. The "dogs" are what engage the gears side to side. Once the "dogs" round up a bit the gears won't stay engaged. I can't tell some are from 929 or different years of the 954? However, you are taking yours apart? Take it out, see what you need to replace. Usually when 4th is out, second is close behind. I would simply order the gears you need, have the trans sent out and do a full undercut. In both acceleration and deceleration sides. I went through 2 transmissions with 4th going first and then 2nd. I had the trans undercut and then cryo treated for strength. No more problems. Fix it right, only have to do once?

+1 on the race-cut gears. For strength and positive engagement undercutting the dogs is the way to go. Also you may want to look into a shift rod support. Gilles makes one for the 954 as well the R series from yamaha. It reduces flex in the shaft giving a more positive feel when shifting. I bought mine from McCoy motorsports for about $60 or so. Nice piece and you can tell the difference the first time you ride. Their web addy is ToBeFast.com if your intrested.

No i'm sure that the gears are not the same. I am sure that they are probably a little more heavy duty on the 954 with the increase power compared to the 929. If they are really the same the part numbers would be the same. That would be the only way to know if they are the same part. But this isn't always the case though, when they change manufactures for certain parts the part numbers change even though that they are still the same part. But other than that don't waste your money on used 929 parts, always stick with 954 stuff
