954 pc3 faceplate button adjustments??

On my 954 its still running a little on the rich side even after a down loaded map install, so I'm incrementally adjusting using the low, mid and high face plkate buttons. After making it leaner in low, mid and high (-2 on each) its getting better I can tell but, still a little on the rich side because of a very slight fuel odor and a very sooty exhaust pipe on the inside.

Can I keep using the face plate buttons to lean it out a little more? What I'm doing is adjusting it leaner one by one and inbetween adjustments cleaning the soot from the inside of pipe and after a short ride inspecting the amount of soot. Its been getting less and less sooty inside the pipe on every adjustment. Can I feel safe by continuing to do it this way? It is getting better and better every time.

Hey, do you have an infrared temp gun by chance? If you do, I'd say it's safe to do that way so long as you could measure how hot your exhaust was getting. If it gets too hot, you're getting into some danger with the exhaust valves...

To be honest, I never used the face-plate on mine, I did everything with the lap top. And I also played with the ignition advancing to help things too. I took that half system map and made it "feel" real good. I know it was butt dyno, but I was using some other things like speed, rpms, and other stuff to help dial it in.

The only real way is to shell out the dough for dyno tune with an O2 sensor shoved into the exhaust that can accurately measure your A/F ratio and let you know what really works.

Hows the oil consumption going? Any changes in that?

I put it on the dyno today and even though the map I downloaded feels better and runs smoother, its still not close. The tuner guy said its not too lean to do any damage and Its rideable. That's my main concern. Bottom line is It needs a proper custom map.

I have about 300 miles on the oil and filter when I put the pc3 on it. So, the oil in it now is a little thinner than brand new because of dilution. On the dyno today, when he pinned the throttle wide open and on hard deccel it blew out about about a quarter of the smoke it blew out last time on the dyno. A lot less. Last time it was heavily diluted 10/40, this time I had 20/50 with almost no dilution in it. Next up within two weeks is a rear tire and a dyno custom tune. Then I'll be putting in a new oil filter and some fully synthetic amsoil and see exactly how much of an oil consumption problem I have. I'll keep it posted.
