ive heard of people with 954's claim they end up with a stress fracture in the engine block that they have been told is from the block being bored from a 929 to a 954 and the walls are too thin.
the stators in these bikes tend to fail a bit (regulator rectifier) is common
the bike is getting up in age and some shops wont work on a bike older than 10 years.

I hadnt heard that until this post. I can almost guarantee i ride my 54 as hard if not harder than most people, and at nearly 50k miles it still purrs like a kitten. No engine issues of any kind.

Power mods not really any. K&n filter, Jardine slipon, pc3, and +2 on the rear sprocket. The only things i have had to replace were the brakes, and a clutch (it just wore out). I run mobil 1 full syn for oil, and i change it every 2k miles (thats just me, im a bit over cautious). The bike since new has seen prolly about 20 track days, made at least 300 passes down the 1/4 mile, and more wheelies and stoppies than i can count. Its even slid down the pavement at 45 mph on lowside. This bike has been a tank, and still pulls to redline like the day i got her.
Im not saying that my bike is the example of all others, i have heard of electrical issues on a few, but mine has been bulletproof.
It should also be noted i am an auto tech, and i consider myself fairly knowledgeable about bikes, i do all my own repairs and maintanance, and it gets treated extremely well in that area.

the 929 and 954 use 2 different blocks for the engine (54 has better cooling channels and a thicker engine casing- not to mention none of the internal parts from the 929 match up to the 954... "stressed engine block from boring" o please- Get the facts and look up the difference from the two bikes.- INCLUDING ENGINE
