45t Sprocket-Is it needed and where to buy one?
 

I keep reading that -1/+2 (from 16/43 stock/ to 15/45) is the best combo for street riding. Is that the BEST and how well does it hold it's Top-end? I was running a 15/43, but my top-end was nil....got out the hole fast, but it had no top-end. If the 15/45 is the best combo where can I get a steel 45 tooth 530 sprocket?

If you go from 15/43 to 15/45 you will have better acceleration but even less top speed unless you cant pull redline in sixth gear as it is now. I don't know too many places on public roads you can do that consistantly.:>)

I have an 02 and I run 15/45. After much debate I went to a 520 chain when I needed new sprockets. The acceleration is bananas and the low end torque could pull a tree stump. I'm not concerned with top end loss because how many people ride flat out at top end anyways? She can wheelie now in 3rd gear at 75 mph with a good bounce. To say all that, I guess you would need to decide what are you looking to gain by switching. Do you race...track/dragstrip or wheelie?

Either way I think you will be pleased with the 15/45..It will make your pipe sing a sweet tune due to the higher revs. Perhaps you have a friend that's geared who may let you ride his to get a feel of it.

To answer your last question, you can do a Google search on "quick acceleration kits" or head on down to your local stealership and they can help you pick something out. Steel sprockets are the way to go. Good luck and happy hunting.

Sorry about the thread jack, even though a few of us 954's can, but Con I just noticed your Sig. I appreciate that....but by the look of that fighter its an honor for the exhaust i made to be placed next to that bad @ss swingarm...

I've been thinking about going with a 15/45 520 set up for a while but I just don't know. I'm not great with wheelies and the stock gearing already seems wheelie happy. At 130 I can roll on the throttle and the front end gets pretty light again. How does the 15/45 effect top speed? I know most of the time we don't have a place to run wide open, but there are a few places around here that when we ride we really open it up. Most of my riding is done on the back road twisties.

Caveman I'm running stock gearing right now until I need a new chain. Then I will likely go 16/45. I think that ratio is the best compromise with giving a bit better pull off of corners without making the bike miserable when you have to cruise the freeway for an hour to get to the twisty bits.
