Hey all! New to the site. looking for any tips. My 2000 929rr second gear sucks! Always pops out. I have went thru the trans in the past,replaced anything looking questionable. Was ok for a very short time.
Im an auto tech but this was my first bike teardown. What the hell did i miss? Thinking of messing with the external shift linkage,although it was originally fine exactly where it is. Most obvious part I replaced during teardown was a badly worn shift fork. Of course I thought bingo...thats my problem. Any insite much appreciated. Thanks

 

Welcome to the forum. Typically, it will kick out off gear due to worn "dogs" on the sides of the gears. The protrusions on the sides that engage with the gear next to it. When they wear, they get beveled sides, which causes a lateral thrust of the gear which pushes it out. Only way to fix that is to replace the gear. The teeth on the gear will look perfect because they never disengage with the one they are engaged with. But the wear and damage is on the sides. Google worn dogs, there are plenty of images for reference.

Sadly none of the gears are available new from Honda. Only option is used or maybe 3rd party.

Thanks for the info. I figured Id be looking at completely tearing back into it, which I dont want to commit to again. Could a slight linkage adjustment possibly help for a bit or would I cause more problems possibly with the other gears???

 

Only thing that the linkage is going to do is affect where the pedal sits with relation to your foot and how easy/difficult it is to go up/down the gears. Motorcycle transmissions are constant mesh. One gear isn't going to affect the others. Only issue I can think of is if it keeps popping out of 2nd, it might make it harder to skip over and get it into 3rd since they're sequential transmissions.

 

If you want to completely eliminate this problem you need to have the transmission undercut. Did you replace the shift drum when you replaced the shift fork? Also check the teeth on the shifter rod for wear where it engages the shift star. You only have to remove the engine and split the cases to remove the gears in the transmission. Everything else can be done with the engine in the frame by removing the clutch and oil pan.

I gave up riding on the street for drag racing. My current bike is a 2009 Hayabusa. I bought a frame and pieced this bike together in over a year just for drag racing.

 

I'm guessing that puts you back in the seat a bit. Nice looking bike.

 

That is some purposeful looking machine, nitros kit as well by the look of it. What sort of times are you running?

 

Thanks, It runs good for stock motor on 87 octane pump gas. Bike has 50 shot of nitrous that rarely gets used. Runs 5.70s@~122mph 1/8 mile and 8.90s-9.00s@~145mph 1/4 mile
