Default More sprockets

Hello, does anybody know for sure that going -1 up front knocks off top speed? On paper is different than what might happen in life. Can't decide ifI should get the RK Quick Acceleration Chain Kit 189. dollars? Thanks

look down through the recent threads. I tkink it was TK who posted a great site that allows you to stick numbers for gearing change in and it will show tons of info on how it will effect the bike. If you just change the front you don't really need to go chain too unless it is in really bad shape. Honda sells a 15 for 30 bucks or so. Moto-heaven sellssprocketkits for 90 bucks if you go through ebay, 100 if through the site. They have different stages but the stage 1kit is -1 +2. If the chain is good you should be able to go that far without it, just sprockets.

If it wasn't TK who posted that link to the gearing page I apologize to whoever it was. Thanks too, nice info.

i never had stock gearing on my last 929 very long, but talking to a parts dealer over the phone a few years back about sprocket sizes he told me he raced his r1 on the weekends. he said he lowered the gearing very slightly and gained top speed. i asked how this was possible. he said if you were to take two of the same bikes one geared taller than the otherand run them totherev limiter in top gear the one with the taller gearing wouldhave the highest top speed but most bikes (at that time) didnt have the power to hit the rev limiter in top gear with stock gearing. so by lowering the gearing abit he was able to run his r1 to thelimter in top gear and picked up a few mph.i never tested that myself but it makes since.

now thegearing calulator shown the other day seems to only show speeds for eachsetsprockets at 11000 rpms but the 929 redlines at 12500 rpms so theres alittle more left than that calculator showed the question is how to get there. i had mine registiter 188mph at the limiter ( i know i wasnt going that fast ) with lower gearing and thereare videos of othersmaxing out 929s at adisplayed 188 mphonfloating around. i dont think the average mods with stock gearing would make enough power to really go that fast because of wind resistance, maybe if 929s had a trueram air system or with some motor work then yeah, but lowering the gearing alittle may not be all bad, it might help you overcome some wind resistance.

another example the 06 cbr 1000 has a one tooth bigger sprocket stock but honda had raised the redline alittle so the bike would have the same top speed as the previous model. so a 1 or 2 tooth addition in the back wont be noticable on you top end, you will probably run out of room beforehit the limiter in sixth gear.

the circumference of your rear tire plays a roll in top speed too.

hell my last 929 had 15/50 gearing (mainly for wheelies) then iwent to 15/48 and loved it. blazing quick. i never missed to mph i lost and never got left and rarelybeat on speed runs with fellow riders. mpg sucked though.

http://www.gearingcommander.com/

The gearing calculator looks pretty close. within 2-3 mph in all areas for what I have observed on my bike with various gearings, and a calibrated speedo healer.

Just got my sprocket in today.
Stock is (16/43)
Currently (15/48) -1/+5
Just got (15/56) -1/+13 Braaaaaap.

1st gear top speed at the limiter
Stock: 76 mph.
-1/+5: 64 mph.
-1/+13: 55 mph.

So I lose about 21 mph in first gear from stock.

6th gear highway speed / revs.
Stock: 75 mph @ 5k rpm
-1/+5: 75 mph @ 6k rpm
-1/+13: 75 mph @ 7k rpm

According to the calculator it should max out at 124 mph in 6th gear at the limiter.

So from stock, my current setup is great for all around... and it tops at 145 mph which is still nice...

This new setup really takes away from my top end... but the torque... who cares lol. Atleast I will still be able to ride the highway without being pinned, and for reasonable riding with others, should be able to keep up for "spirited rides".

Now, if I only had a bigger gas tank lol...

ok just came back from the calculator, i didnt know that it would allow you to put in your own rpm.

so with the stock gearing in 6th gear at 12500 rpms the 929 has a top speed of 187, when i hit the limiter in top gear the speedo showed 188 so maybe it isnt off by as much as we all think. (the bike should beable to calculate speed well it just cant compensate for gearing)

i also pluged in 15/45 and it listed a 168mph at 12500

i just gotta make for sure 12500 rpm is the limit on the 929

929 limiter is at 11,500. Would put you at 172. =P
154 mph with -1/+2

SC929 thanks for the nod

Privymaster, yes 100% for certain you will lose some top end speed, but you will have much more grunt thru the first 4 gears. As long as you can live with only going 150mph instead of 165 its a great mod for only 30 bucks.

Thanks for all the great numbers and your time.
Scott
For now I just ordered stainless brakes lines, new pads, fresh fluid,..dirty and frames sliders. I am going to get a stock air filter and probably a sprocket.
