Default big rears and why we love them

I thought I'd stick this in a whole seperate thread, cause it was getting off topic on the ROTM one from Lord Jersey.

We got talking about oversize rear tires, and Triax put up a really funny post -

"It does look badass, my friend did the 300 rear tire kit on his R1. Looks mean as hell, but he can't stand the fact that everyone can smoke him in the corners on bike that cost less than his swingarm alone. Its actually kinda funny. "

I got a kick out of that. But I'm wondering - can anybody tell me what it is about the handling in turns that suffers as we go to wider tires? What do you actually feel in the turn? Push, pull, breaking loose, etc?

I got a friend who rides a chopper with a 300 rear and he says it gets swimmy on rutted roads, which is understandable. The other look I really love is the extended swingarm for drag racing - god that makes a bike look mean - but again, the handling that was engineered into the bike is gone. Too bad.

Thanks for seperating threads. I find that when I get down to far it does feel "swimmy". Kinda like it wants to break loose. It never does, but I get a little uncomfortabel if I get too low and fast in a turn. I haven't had anyone to go against to see if I get "Smoked" in any turns though.

I enjoy going low. I would drag my knees if I could but I don't think jeans would hold up too well. Sport bikes are supposed to go low in my opinion. But that's just me. I'm not down talking you or what you enjoy. I think it looks bad *** to to have a big rear tire. But it just doesn't give me the response that a thinner tire does when I want to lean from one side to the other. That's what makes sport bikes and the riders so awesome. We all have different styles but at the end of the day... we are ALL sprot bike riders. It's one big *** family!

The extended swing arm is so ugly. I wanted it for the purpose but just can't push myself to look so dumb. The tire I'm not a real big fan of but as long as it's not crazy big I wouldn't see a problem with it. But everybody style is everybody style that's the whole point of customizing. Personally I hate Chrome. I just think everybody killed it. It's like now everybody's bike is chromed out. About the big rear I don't know. I really just like an average rear but it has to have some good curves to it and it really has to be able to take a beating. All that matters is when I lay that thing down it better stick and move.

They look mean as hell but they slow a bike down so much. I think alot of it has to do with the contour of the tire itself. On a 190 you have to cover 10mm more tire to lean the same as a 180. I'm not exactly sure but you can feel a difference in turn in when you compare a large tire to a smaller one, even if your only going from a 190 to a 180. Here's the bike that spawned this topic. 2005 R1, every nut and bolt chromed, 300 rear tire kit, aftermarket wheels, wavy rotors, rear view camera and monitor, nitrous, full system, and some more crazy ****. Took us forever to finally finish this beast. Its bad *** looking but if you want to see someone get pissed, let them spend 10k on their bike and take an F3 (my previous bike) and smoke the living hell out them in the corners. I laughed everytime

QuinC and Triax, thanks for the pics. And everybody, thanks for the input.

I gotta say, Triax - I'm not a real fan of chrome either, but man my jaw dropped when I saw that picture you posted. Functional around corners or not, THAT IS ONE GORGEOUS FREAKIN MACHINE. I might not impress anybody on track day, but I'd be damn proud to own it.

The wider tires don't handle as well because of the profile. If you take a close look at them they are much flatter than a stocker. That sidewall is what is giving you grip when you're way over. the best handling tires will usually be the most rounded with almost no tread near the chicken strip. the big boys also weigh more.
