Angry Woolly Gear Change

Hi guys,

I have a CBR900 RRV 1997, 35,000 miles.

She runs great, but the gear change is a bit woolly/vague. The first three gears are fine, but 4th, 5th, and 6th it's hard to feel the change and it's starting to get on my nerves and spoiling my enjoyment of the bike.

Is this a known fault with 900's, or is there a way to adjust the gear change so it is more positive?

I don't have any service history with the bike, but it appears to have been well looked after, there are some expensive parts on the bike, so money obviously hasn't been an issue in the past.

I'd love to hear from anyone with previous experience/knowledge of this model.

Thanks Guys.

Try switching up the oil. Could be just that simple.

It could just be the selector mechanism, is it the original? these do benefit from being stripped, adjusted and rebuilt.

Thanks Demon, I had that thought as well. The oil is new, only about 1000 miles or so, but it's worth a try. What weight oil would you recommend?

Hi Gunk, yes as far as I know the selector mechanism is the original, I'll put this on my 'to do' list.

I was mainly worried that there was some serious wear in the gearbox itself. The reason I went for this model of CBR was because they have a reputation for being pretty bullet-proof, hope I haven't bought a duffer

Thanks again for the replies.

I doubt it is the gearbox, it's very rare for it to be troublesome, in fact the carbed Blades have very little go wrong unlike the later Fi models

Phew! That's good to hear, when I get a chance, I'll dismantle and clean the mechanism.

Rotella T6. I've heard people report smoother shifting when they switch to it.

I'd change the clutch fluid to start.

I'd like to see you try!

It's a cable operated clutch

Haha,bloody multibike forums...
I have just rebuilt a 92 CBR1000F and one of the issues I had was bleeding the clutch, theres so much air I couldn't get a vacuum to start it off, I had to crack open the banjo bolt on the master cylinder and reverse bleed it. My answer came from that as the gear selection did seem 'wooley' with a little air.

Either way maybe adjusting the clutch might help ...
