Speedo Trouble?

I was riding to work today,I looked down at my speedo to notice that it went down to 0 went back up to 35 briefly, went back down to 0 and kept doing this occasionally and it would pause momentarily at each one. So I took it home and drove my car to work and I have not had a chance to look at it. But I would like any suggestions as to where to start looking when I do get home.

It ia a 97. I got home from work and checked over all the connectors involving the speedo, and couldn't find any loose. So I took it out for a ride, and it seems to do it under very slight to no throttle. There was one point where I took off and it dropped at every shift, but it only hit 0 then went right back up. I'm not really sure what it is at this point. When I got the bike none of the gauges worked so I got some more and haven't had a problem till now.

I had something similiar problem but mine the needle will be vibrating when it touchs 200km/h and when I off the ignition, the needle will make afull turn and stays there. Its a '97 too.
Still can't find the faultandthe needlebroke last week(I guess because of the vibration)

Hi, I had the same problem when I first got my bike. check the rectifer! This is a sign of too much power. I was coming off one of our Hwy's and down shifted, and that was it. the speedo blew.

look at the wires check the charging, make sure your not getting to much power.

Well it wasn't to long ago that I replace the R/R, and plug, and added some ground. So that is the last place I would have suspected. But I will check it out tomorrow when I don't have work. But the main reason I took it home is from my experiences with cars when the altenator goes out all the gauges start going crazy well on a manual anyway. So that had me worried that I may have a charging issue.

When I checked the rectifier 2 weeks ago (the bike was having problem to start), its shows less power output from the battery and I believe that was the cause the speedo to malfunction. I had changed the rectifier and the power output is constant and normal (13v+) butstill the same problem till the needle breaks!

RE: Speedo Trouble?

Well now it is spraeding to my temp gauge. So I am hoping it is the R/R as it is a lot cheaper than a stator. But I need a sure fire way to tell if my R/R is bad. I have a schematic on how to check but all the tests I can't do with my multi meter. I can't get a reading from the R/R itself, and the schematic says to use diode test function toward the end but I can't get readings on that either. I use the write up from electrosport.

After some more reading and tests I believe it is the R/R. But while I was reading I found some people who used different make R/R's instead. So I am going to get one from a gsx-r1000 and see how that goes. Apparently Honda is the only make that has problems with R/R's. I'll keep you posted.
