Default My new 99

Got this last week after owning an 06 Harley softtail since new, and a ZX9R for about a week. Love the bike. Great power for around town, and it almost slid me off the back the first time i let it wrap out. My question is: how hard are fork seals to change? I have done a lot of mechanic work in my career, and have a pretty complete set of basic tools. Dealer wants 300 to install 25 dollar seals. Also, I am thinking about adding some kind of decal. Anyone want to look at this bike and offer suggestions? Also, if anyone knows where to find flush mount signals and chrome mirrors for it I would appreciate that information.

Fork seals ain't that bad, it's what ya gotta do, to get to 'em, that sucks. Pulling the fairings, tire, fender, brakes, etc. Hence the price tag from the mechanic. It's not technical, just involved. ;-)

The only special tool ya need is a piece of pvc pipe and a hoseclamp. Cut the pipe square, then slot the end several times, so that you can use the pipe-clamp to squeeze the pvc snug around the tube. Use that to drive the new seals squarely in to place. 2" pvc or whatever will slip over your inner tube is the idea.

The rest is just dis-assemble/re-assemble add fluid, blah, blah.

Do a search in the how-to section there are several good picture books of the job on this site.

Default Fork seals...

I had my 94 900rr fork seals replace for $120 including the seals. He's a Japanese mechanic that only does japanese bikes. Think he charge me about $45 per fork. It's not worth the time to DIY, not worth for dealer doing it either. Think you need a special lift to take both forks out. Nice bike BTW!!!!

Thanks. Think I am going to wait till winter then attempt to do the fork seals myself. Unless I run across a cheap mechanic in the meantime.
