Clutch tapping
I managed to get a small inspection mirror at the right angle to see the mating face of the clutch basket and oil pump drive, I’m satisfied that it’s fully home so the basket gear being somewhere between 1 and 2mm proud of the primary gear ref the above photo must be normal, I would have had it buttoned up yesterday were it not that I found that AW motorcycles had sent me one “B” clutch plate too few, idiots, trying to decide whether to wait for them to send me the missing plate or reuse one of the old ones, I’ve found one at 2.75mm so will probably do that, the replacement pressure plate springs seem a little over firm so I may find they make the clutch pull heavy, so if that’s the case I’ll take the cover plate off again, fit the replacement plate from AW and weaker springs, anyway I thought I’d mention the gears incase anyone has the same question in the future.
Well AW motorcycles strike again!, I decided to go ahead with fitting one of my old plates, when I put the pressure plate on It was evident that the stack was too high, I put the side cover on temporarily and the clutch lifter arm was almost fully forward before it started to pull on the lifter pin, took the AW plates out, measured at 3.00mm, the max RRV thickness is 2.78mm (min 2.3mm), so the plates they sent are too thick, I will be having strong words with them tomorrow!!.
fitted my old plates back in, clutch works as it should, but the rumbling is still evident and the tapping that can be felt when you hold the lifter arm forward with your fingers with the engine running is still there, so we know that the new basket bearing and thrust bearing have made no difference.
so I’ll just monitor it to see if it gets worse, if it doesn’t I’ll regard it as “normal”, even though the engineer in me knows it’s not!
PS after many EBay messages and a phone call AW motorcycles sent me a 50% refund, I raised a case with EBay and 5 minutes later got a 100% refund, I’ll leave it up to you to decide if AW are worth buying from!.
