98 triple tree, what else will work?
apparently my 98 CBR 900RR has seen too many wheelies, or has been crashed, and a PO had just ridden it this way for quite a while. the steering head bearings were REALLY sloppy. i tightened them down some, but have to change them out.
finally got the roller bearings to put in, so i disassembled the front end. in trying to pull the steering stem out, i discovered that the threads on the top of the stem are trashed....probably from all the abuse of riding on bad bearings. i need to replace the triple lower and stem.
my question is....is there any interchangeability with other models of CBR? i have read that the 97 and older models are a bit narrower, and not a direct swap. anyone try any other [maybe more common] model CBR triple tree that would be a direct trade? there seem to be lots of 600 trees for sale everywhere, and even a few XX steering stems out there. i have only come across a few 98/99 steering stems for sale, and only one that had the top bearing cover and nuts that go along with it.
