96 forks set-up tips please
Hi everyone,
I own a 1999 VTR1000 and will be switching it over shortly to a front-end from a 1996 CBR900RR. MyVTR has a few mods and the weight is down to about the same as a stock CBR9. I weigh 160 lbs and hope to do some track days with the ol' girl. I was hoping someone may be able to help me with some pointers/guidleines for setting up the front end. More specifically, what about:
- oil type?
- oilheight?
- spring? I was looking at probably cutting them and adding some spacer length to stiffen them up a bit
- any baseline settings for comp and rebound?
thanks a lot
Mikstr
P.S. Before I get accused of being lazy, I tried numerous searches and found little (not the most useful search functions I must say)
cheers

RE: 96 forks set-up tips please
Sure, I'll step up and ask Why? I would think the VTR would be as good if not better than the RR anyway? Surely it could be set up to be better for the same money as redoing the RR's legs anyway?
If you want baseline settings you can look on Sport Riders web site........I dont know if it goes back that far but it may.
Other than being curious, I have no help for you. Why not a 954 or 929 or better yet a 1000RR if you are going through the work of swapping them anyway?

RE: 96 forks set-up tips please
Hi and thanks for the reply.
The VTR has 41 mm forks adjustable only for pre-load and rebound while the CBR has 45 mm tubes and is also adjustable for compression. Also, all of the earlier race VTR's (Moriwaki, for example) used CBR front ends as they are a direct bolt-on. I looked at using an RC front end but realized early on that parts are somewhat rare and expensive. Also, I picked up a set of magnesium PVM rims for my bike and using the CBR900 front allows me to keep the wheel (which should lighten steering and quicken the side to side transitions noticeably due to the dramatically decreased inertia). In terms of the Sportrider site, I downloaded the info already (as well as PerformanceBike). I was hoping for info about oil quantity and viscocity, as well as perhaps info about chopping the spirings and adding a spacer.
BTW, this is but the latest in a long list of mods to my beloved VTR.
Anyone else?

Alrighty then. Good call and good luck with the rebuild.
5w if I were to guess but I honestly am not very good with the rebuilding of forks for a performance gain.
That's what Traxxion is for. LOL.
Good luck. Post up some pics when it's done it sounds nice.

thanks
I'll also be adding a swingarm brace from a 900RR.
In terms of current mods, it has the following:
- RC51 front MC and calipers (will be replacing the MC with a radial unit from an R1)
- braided brake lines and EBC HH pads
- re-worked rear shock (Race-Tech kit) with Hyperpro rear spring, 8 mm shim to raise ride height
- Yoshi Stage 1 cams with ported and milled heads
- modded airbox and Flo-Commander, short intake runners, DJ kit
- lightened flywheel
- RC45 quick action throttle
- mid-mount Micron slip-ons with heat-wrapped headers(soon to be replaced by 2-1 custom set-up with Blue Flame dual port can; said to increase mids at expense of slight dip in top-end, will also be cleaning up all the accessible welds to enhance air flow)
- PVM cast magensium wheels (being powdercoated)
- -1/+2 gearing with 520 chain
- flush-mount signals
- Mototeck undertail
and more... she runs real sweet
