Default '94 won't start or stay running...

I just got a '94 900RR the other day for really cheap. I got it from a Harley shop that knew nothing about it. When I got there it wouldn't start because it seemed to be flooded, so they pulled the tank and the plugs and then put it back together and it worked fine.

On the way home, every time I stopped at a stoplight, it seemed like it was going to die on me. It wouldn't stay running, I had to restart it a couple times and fiddle with the choke and the throttle to keep it running.

Once I got it home and parked it for a few hours, it won't start anymore. It acts like it's flooded, but I can't really smell any gas, so maybe it's not getting any?

What do you think could be the problem? A bad fuel pump maybe?

You read my mind. I just changed the fuel pump on mine. It acted the same way. It would start and run fine, then sound like it was flooding out, when it really was starving for fuel. I tapped on the fuel pump and it started flowing again, so I bought a new one and replaced it. All is well.

Is the fuel pump in the tank? How hard is it to replace?

all fuel pumps are in the tank they are quit easy to replace just make sure you dissconnect the power and get another gasket for it and you will be fine, fuel pumps are real commen to go out if they sit for a period of time

Actually, the 1993 and 1994 models use an external fuel pump. When you remove your tank, you will see it there plain as day. It is located on the left side of the bike underneath where the petcock is. It plugs into the wiring harness underneath the seat. Easy as pie to replace.

Take that fuel pump off and throw it away. I have a 93 and it runs just fine without one. I'm surprised that no one has said that before me. These forums is where I learned about it. The 96 to 99 bikes dont have one and run perfect.

No! Don't do that!
I had a dead fuel pump, and I completely removed it and I could only run for about half a tank before no more gas would get into the carbs.
FYI FZR fuel pumps drop right in and are super cheap used.
I have has one for thousands of miles no problems.

It could be different for newer years, but in '94 I know that you need one or else you can only use up half a tank.

Not true at all. I go 140 or 150 miles before filling up and without switching to reserve. Your bike, do as you please.
