'94 CBR900RR #3 Question
Hi all. I've got a '94 900rr with a knock in #3 piston/cylinder. I've got the top end off, and can notice an obvious problem w/ the #3 piston. It doesn't rise as far as the others, and on the downstroke, I can tap the top of the piston w/a deadblow hammer and hear the piston 'seat' down onto either the pin or the crank. Now, I knew this was probably the case when I bought this bike, so no suprises so far. My question is, is this a known problem with the '93-'95 RR's? Seems that every post I've read on the 'net regarding motor woes with this model all revolve around the #3 piston/rod/crankpin (one was a gent selling a set of pistons, one of which had suffered the "dreaded #3" failure). And if this is the case, is there anyone who's been thru the rebuild process themselves. I'm just curious whether to expect to have to machine the crank, or maybe get lucky and just replace the piston/rod/wristpin. As much fun as I'm having tearing the motor down(really, I've never been this deep into a modern 4-stroke, it's interesting), I'm just starting to wonder if I wouldn't be better off simply picking up a used motor (easier said than done) for $700-$1200, or soldier on w/the rebuild of my existing motor. Anybody w/past experience, I'd love to hear from ya'! Thanks everybody.
