Default 900rr running problems

Hello guys iv never tried any of these forums before but I thought I’d give it a go I’m havin some problems with my 96 cbr 900 streetfighter.i got the bike a few months ago and my first drive on it was going good for about 30 miles and it was spluttering a bit suddenly but went on.then on my way home the bike would eventually spluttering itself down to turn off and then would turn over and over but wouldn’t start. then after 5 minutes of waiting it would start again go for another few miles and do this again.i have cleaned carbs and changed plugs took it for a drive and within a mile it is playing up again and don’t really know what to do next?

Sounds a bit like fuel starvation, have a look at the fuel tank and associated pipes, make sure their not pinched and are clear, any dirt in the tank? if the bike is running well until this happens , then don't think its the carbs, but a good inspection of the fuel line will tell

I have also looked into fuel lines etc it’s getting a steady flow of fuel and doesn’t seem to be any blockages or anywhere not getting fuel?could cdi or coil packs be causing this spluttering etc ?

You could test the coils, but without a PVA you can only do resistance check, but will show you how your coils are fairing, would be unlucky if it was the ICM , so test primary and secondary on the coils

Does it make any difference what amount of fuel you have in your tank when this occurs ?
Could it be possible that the lower section of your fuel filter, the one within the tank itself, has become partially blocked ?

i don’t think so it seems to have a steady flow of fuel the whole time and it was cutting out on a full tank as well as nearly empty?

How do you know it has a steady flow of fuel and that enough is getting into the float bowls after those miles when it acts up?

Try running it with fuel cap open, just to make sure the breather is not blocked.

You can remove the fuel pump, they’ll run without one. I’d also check the petcock/fuel tap make sure the fuel is flowing correctly.

Always check everything else before tearing the carbs apart, the carbs seem to be blamed for every running problem, the irony is that they are pretty reliable and very rarely need rebuilding. Often the problem is elsewhere.

After reading your first post again, I think it sounds like it might be a faulty regulator, it’s a common problem with the early Fireblades

il try running it with the cap open when I get home but I think it could be electrical as I forgot to mention a few weeks ago it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders before it cut out on me?

I think it’s your regulator/rectifier it’s a common fault.
