Default when to change brake pads and rotors?

i am looking at a bike to buy it is a 04 600rr with 3k miles. he will take 4500 for it, it has been down on the left side, some rash, bent shifter, broken peg. i figure it will cost like 100 bucks to fix the peg and shifter. the price seams high i am told for it but i am willing to pay it if it needs nothing else. that is why i am woundering at 3000 miles is there a chance it will need new brakes? i dont want to buy it then go have to get new brakes put on. thanks

I can't say for sure when to change the pads. It depends how it was ridden. I do know that changing the pads is an easy do it yourself job so I wouldn't worry them.

pads take less than 30 mins to do. A bike needing pads in with less than 3k miles... i doubt it. pads maybe rotors, deff not.

My bike is about to break 20k miles and I am just now replacing my rear break pads, I doubt you'll have any brake problems at 3k...but then again nothing is for sure.

Well if it was dropped the rotors could have taken a hit, even a small hit can warp em. Thats not a big deal though you can buy em used for pretty dam cheap. Pads well who knows mine car with new pads at 10k front and rear so idk. I did flush my brake fluid and coolant as well

You can easily visually inspect the amount of pad life left by looking at them without having to remove anything. At 3k, he'd have to be one hardcore **** to burn through pads... and if he did, you don't want that bike.

ive put 17000 on the original set so far... i think within the next 1000 ill replace the pads. like the other guy said, if the rotors took a hit when it went down, make sure they arent bent.... that may require a little extra help. ride it around and see how it stops... should be nice and smoothe

lol nice. Both sets of brake pads = $70 tops. I changed my at 10k miles and it took me like 3 hours to do (I didnt have any of the tools and drove back and forth from the hardware store). Otherwise it'll take about 30 minutes. Make sure your clamps don't tighten up when you remove the pads. It's a bitch to open em up again. Rotors are pretty cheap tho but I would worry more about the frame if he dropped it on the go. Good luck
