Warped rotors?
 

My 06 CBR600RR front brakes are inconsistent in braking at low speeds, 5-10 mph. It seems like the brakes bite hard at one part of the disc, then slides the rest of the way. I know exactly what warped rotors feel like, but there is no pulsating feel through the lever. It's extremely odd because I installed brand new Galfer wave rotors + new kevlar pads and it still doesn't go away. Here's one idea I have for this issue: I'm missing both spring retaining clips for the calipers. Could that be causing the unevenness in low speed braking? I've checked and rechecked my wheel bearings, and also checked visually for warping but I don't see any signs.

Usually, what you're describing would be from excessive build up on certain parts of the rotor. How many miles are on your current set up and are the the original (only set) of pads you've run on these rotors?


I would use the retaining clips. They help keep the pad up and staight around the pad pin, but I'm not sure they'd cause this issue.

If you generally think you have good feel in your brakes, you'd feel a warp at faster speeds than just 5-10 mph.

The galfer rotors are brand new. Less than 20 miles on them. However, I made the mistake of running the old sintered galfer pads from my old set up on these new rotors. They made a very uneven wear mark. I then swapped new kevlar pads in after 20 miles. I also installed the retaining clips today and they helped a little.

Brake pads transfer a very thin layer of pad material on to the rotor. By switching from the sintered to the Kevlar pads you may have messed up this transfer layer. I've done this on car rotor by switching back and forth between street and track pads.

What I would is thoroughly sand both the rotors and the pads to get all old material removed. I use 100 grit aluminum oxide paper and then thoroughly wash with dish soap and hot water.

Yeah, its the build up from the other pads. Remove it and you should be good to go
