Sprockets -1/+2 -1/+1 -1/stock ?!?!
What's up guys. Got some questions for ya. I got talkin to a buddy of mine last night while we were out riding. He rides an R1. He was talkin about how he had ordered a new front sprocket that was -1 teeth. First of all, I was wondering what the size of my stock sprockets are... '04 cbr 600rr. I understand how the sprockets work as far as dropping them in the front, or adding in the rear, or a combination of both adds acceleration to the bike, and the exact opposite sprocket set-up creates a higher top-end, but lowers accel. What I'm wondering is just how much of a difference will I notice with going down a tooth in the front and leave it at that. I'm lookin to be able to get some more acceleration, and i'd like to be able to pull up some power wheelies a little easier. I know i could go -1/+2.... but is that too much? Will I be wheeling allllll day? Another question I've got is at what point do i NEED to grab a different sized chain. I've only got 2600 miles on the chain right now, so I wont be replacing it unless I have to get a bigger one, smaller, blah blah. And my last question *phew* is where a good place would be to purchase the sprocket(s). Hey sirLimpzalot... if you read this thread... can you get a hand on these? I'm guessing as much, anyways thanks for helping a sprocket newbie out guys. I appreciate all feedback... pros/cons... personal experiences with different setups.
I am wondering the same thing. It seems like a relatively cheap performance upgrade to me ( I keep seeing kits for about $140 ) and was thinking if I didn't like it then I would just go back to stock and either keep the sprocket chain set for later or sell it on ebay. Either way I keep hearing just changing spokets and chain over to a 520 type you get added performance because of less mass even if you keep the sprokets stock teeth count. Of course the spockets would be lighter too.
I'm 2up on the rear and it feels perfect. Lots of low end torque, just a little off the top end speed...still hit 155mph easy. I also did the 520 conversion.

I am thinking about the same thing -1 +2 stock is 16 front 43 rear I think not 100% sure but I am pretty sure I was also thinking of a 520 conversion but will see about that
as far as a chain goes if you drive fairly hard probably a new chain a year my buddy has a busa he got a new one last year but about 20k on it and it broke wrapped around the front sporcket and tore up his water pump and clutch case and some other stuff so it's a good idea to replace them somewhat often

a guy i ride with just dropped one tooth in the front on his gsxr600 and said first gear wheelies come up a LOT faster than before. he pulls stand up wheelies for miles, but went down a tooth so that he could pull 3rd gear wheelies. stick with stock gearing for stunting until you're comfortable with wheelies. a 520 chain conversion is simply a smaller chain to reduce the weight and mass allowing power to be better transferred to the wheels. the downside is that you lose a lot of chain stregth so if you plan on doing wheelies, stick with a 530.
Anyone know if and how much this sprocket changing will affect my speedometer readout? How much will it be affected if I only go down a tooth in the front... how about if i go down one in the front and up two on the rear ?
I don't know exactly the effect will be on your speedos accuracy, but 'stock' the Honda speedos are off by about 5% (so I've read). To remedy this, you could install a 'Speedo Healer" (found at speedohealer.com I believe)
If you go -1F & 2+R, you'll find that on speed runs, it feels like your in 5th gear, but for sure you'lll feel it in the low end...the front wheel will come up quick & easy...be careful!
