Default Question about minor maintenence

Hey guys, recently picked up a 08 Honda CBR600rr, in great condition, only had 27xx miles when it was picked up. I put about 150+ miles on it since I've had it (no longer than a week) and recently called my local honda dealership which my extended warranty was transfered too. Well they charge about $150 bucks for minor maintenance which includes oil & filter change, chain lube % adjustment, and inspection etc.

Well I'm more than confident I can do the oil & filter change, along with the lube & adjustment. But my question is, how do you know if your chain needs to be adjust or not? It's a noob question I'm sure, but I'd really like to know.

Also, the last oil change they have on record was around 16xx miles using Mobil 1 synthetic. The previous owner who sold me the bike said he rode it very sparingly (obviously since the bike had less than 3k miles in 3 years.) so I was wondering if I should go ahead and change the oil and filter or if not now, when should I do the next change?

I suggest buying a service manual and doing your own maintenance. It will pay for itself the first time you do your own maintenance interval. You can probably find one for free to d/l if you look around a bit.

You can easily see if your chain is too loose or too tight by pressing up on it on the lower section halfway between the front and rear sprockets. There should be 1-1.4 inches of freeplay.

If the oil hasn't been changed in a year I'd change it and the filter, no matter how few miles it was ridden since the last change.

Chances are with 2700 miles on it you don't need a chain adjustment but to tell for sure there is a gauge by the rear axle nut on the swingarm or you can measure the free play. The manual tells you where it should be at. As for the oil I would change it now. Its cheap insurance. Crangrats on the purchase.

Thanks guy, I'll take a look at the chain then, & I'll go ahead and change asap.

You can download the manual tread. https://cbrforum.com/forum/general-t...A-46596/page4/

4K maintenance really doesn't do too much, as I found out but $150 for that is what most dealership charge for that type of service. I am sure that is something that you can do on your own in the future.
