Newb tire questions 600rr 2003
 

Hey All,

Super new to this sport just picked up a 600rr after taking the MSF course. Totally newb but have rode dirt bikes for a few years..
Anyways my 2003 600RR has some really bad tires and I saw a post on craiglist about tires for sale. The guy emailed me was super helpful heres what he said.
The front tire I'm selling is the exact same size as stock on your bike, but the rear I'm selling is very slightly (10mm) wider - mine is 190/55-17 and yours mounts a 180/55-17 stock. It will certainly mount on the rim fine and subing a 190 for a 180 is very commonly done on 600s (folks like the meatier look), but there is some small chance it might rub, typically at the chainguard or chain. Typically 10mm is within the normal tolerances for variances in different brands of tires, so no big deal, but if everything breaks wrong, it MIGHT run. If you're on a cbr forum, perhaps you can find someone who had tried it. Or go look at your bike and see how much chain clearance you have now.

Does anyone Know if these will fit?? ( have they tried it before??) I am looking to save some money by buying these instead of spending alot.

Will it fit? Sure.
Will it rub? I don't know.
A 180 tire is meant for a smaller rim than the 190. Which means it will distort the shape of the tire when mounted. Now I'm sure that many have done it and ridden with it like that, but I wouldn't. It's really your call...

Now to the REAL concern. What are you getting? Used tires? Do you know the history of this set? Do you know about date codes? Someone selling old stock is putting their pocketbook ahead of concern for your safety.
How much are you really saving? You can get a brand new set from places like motorcyclesuperstore.com or sportbiketrackgear.com for about $250 shipped.

A guy I know bought 25 new Dunlop tires from someone cleaning out a warehouse. He was selling them for $40 each. Great deal, right? Wrong! They were all made 16 years ago, in 2001. They predated the Q1...They were new all right, but so hard that you could slide them across the floor. Rubber goes bad in like 3 to 4 years, depending on how it's stored. I won't run anything made much over a year earlier at time of mounting.

The guy just sent me this message.. Should I just go with these (I ordered these a week ago, but I sold my bike before I had a chance to mount them. Late-2016/early-2017 mold dates so these are very recently made, fresher than what you typically find in stock at a dealer.)

I have a 190 on my 5.5 inch wide bandit rim. It came with the bike when I bought it. I really don't like it. The profile feels really unsure of itself on some corners.

S21?

How much?
S20 wore out quickly. I had S20 evo for a few sets and liked them. The dual compound helped them wear like all the other tires. Now they have S21, but I have not used them. I went back to pilot 2TC and love them.

As a new rider, I would stick to the stock size.
