Default New Tires

I've heard from one of my coworkers, thats been riding for 5 years now, that i should scuff my tires with sandpaper since they are new. Does it really give you that much more grip cornering?

Yeah, that's a good way to do it. When they're new, it's a pretty smooth surface. You can either scuff them, or just take it easy for a while. They might also break traction while going straight if you give it too much gas.

Just be careful and take it easy for the first hundred miles or so. What tires did you buy? I just had Qualifiers installed and it was nothing to break them in. Sand paper might be a good trick (not putting it down) but I never went through the effort.

I never heard of sandpaper to do it, what grade paper or doesn't it matter?

just ride it out. yea there is that nastiness on the outside, but what the tire really needs is a few heat cycles...that's what breaks them in.

there is a gloss on the tires (Release agent from the mold) when you get them... just take em out and go around a couple corners (slowely) to scuff them up. you'll be able to tell the difference between the glossy sections that you haven't leaned over to yet, and the scuffed sections that you have used... I've never heard of/ tried sand paper but I guess it couldn't hurt... probably use a real fine grit... 320, 400, 600 maybe?

Cheers! Think i'll go for the riding option, using sandpaper could take a while eh? And it sounds daft.....LOL!

I have 800 miles on my tires and they are still pretty smooth, especially on the sides.
