I bought a brand new CBR600rr a little over a week ago and have done 620 miles. Booked it in for the 600 mile service, but have to wait a week or so (work comitments and all that!!). Anyway, decided to check the oil today - not easy holding the bike upright and reading the eye glass thingy. Anyway - no oil at oil.....nothing!! Got a mate to check it when I tilted the bike left and right. When tilting it right (and at quite an angle) he could see some oil in the eye glass.

How much oil does a new bike come with? Should it be this low after 600 miles? The dealer is about 15 miles away. Should I top it up before I take it? Sorry for all the questions, but help is much appreciated.

 

take it back to the dealer...that is not right. the oil level should be between the marks when the bike is straight up. send that back.

 

Hmm...that is strange. For my f4i, the oil level should always be between 1/2 and 3/4 up on the sightglass. As a precaution, I would top it off, as you may ruin your engine by running it with too little oil. You may want to check if there is a leak, (ie. by drain bolt or oil filter, etc.).

 

Can't see any leaks. Could I have caused any damage? The oil light has not come on. I will top it up before it goes in for service.

Is the oil they put into a new bike any different to standard stuff?

Read your owner's manual...your bike is suposed to be warm (at normal opp temps), or even running, and THEN you're suposed to check the window.

 

Turn the bike on for a couple minutes andit should read between the lines then.

 

Oh. I didn't know that. I checked it when the engine was cold - I had just started it. Would this make a difference??

 

Yeah, it will. Your oil will expand from the heat. I forgot to mention that in my last post.

 

things can always be worse....
