Breaking a bike in.
 

I have a 2006 600 rr and I have heard a few things about "breaking in". Is there any thing special I should do? This is my first new bike.

stay under 6k for the first 300 miles. then service it at 600.

Also remember to use all your gears, shift frequently to "break in" the gearbox.

If you have any break in questions im sure your owners manual of the Joe who sold it to you should be able to break down your break in...

i took it easy for the first 200 or so miles then gradually got more and more aggressive.

There's a breakin article floating around somewhere here. It goes against conventional "take it easy" wisdom.

Personally, in my Vettes, I've always broke them in more aggressively - although I always allow for warm ups & cool down times. I don't start, then stop engine (most wear time) any more than I have to. I don't run continually hard, but I get it on up there pretty soon.

Factory runs motors on a dyna wide open for several minutes before they turn them loose in the bike. So that ought to tell you something.

Tire breakin. Transmission breakin. Those are other issues.

I always change the oil immediately after I get a brand new machine. This way if there were any loose metal shavings from the factory millings then they will be eliminated. Then after that, drive it like you intend on driving it for the rest of its life.

I just bought a new 2006 Cbr600rr 1 month ago. I stayed under 7k rpm until 45 mi mark, after that I opened it up to around 10k rpm for 5 or 6 spurts, did the oil and filter change and put a slip on pipe and power commander. Started slamming it up to 10k for another 300 miles, than did another oil change and since then have run it hard up to 13k-14k, will do another oil change at 1,000 miles. Runs awesome!!! Try that! Dyno'd at 325miles 109 hp. Stock other than the slip on!

I know this thread is like 2 years old and all, but its the most relevent to my new bike so I thought I'd reply.

The dealer told me to keep it under 6000rpm for the first 600 miles. Also, to fluctuate speeds and gears (but advised he is not telling me to speed).

Said the first 600 miles to not run at sustained RPM liek highway driving for long periods of time as well.

At 600 miles, get the service done as described in your manual, then you should be all broken in.
