Default Bike won't start

Well, another winter is coming to a close, and like an idiot i still dont have a trickle charger. Go out and the bike wont fire up, which i assumed. I usually just jump it with my car (car not running) and its all fine. Did it this time and she started right up, but anytime i take the negative off, it dies. Most of the time right away, but after a while of trying it would stay for maybe 10 seconds after, but still die.

Is this just the battery not holding a charge, and time to replace? or indication of a worse problem

almost seems like the battery is just dead, it's not going to pick up a charge from that other battery very fast. The bike takes power directly from your car battery since that's right on your terminals, you could charge it with your car potentially by leaving it for hours, but I would question that being a good idea or not, I'd just get the trickle charger, let it do it's thing, and the battery should be fine.

Have the battery tested.
Buy new battery when they tell you it has dead cells
Buy charger while there
Don't leave your battery in bike over winter

If you store your bike outside or in an unheated garage, cold will affect the battery even with a battery tender.

And knowing is half the battle!
Some places like Pepboys may claim not to be able to test a motorcycle battery. I haven't figured out if this is a lie or not. But you know you need a charger. Just grab one that also tests batteries.

Also, since its been outside in the cold don't bother trying to charge it yet. Bring it into the house and let it warm up overnight. Cold batteries also don't charge well.

great tip, i will try that since its not really warm enough for me to ride yet, no rush. i always like people who think bottom up cost wise when troubleshooting.

Kinda battery dependant. Batteries will have a max amp charge rate. When you go to buy the battery, ask what the the max amp charge rate is on the battery. And buy a charger that has a selectable charge rate at / under that charge rate.

For example, I have a 12.5v Pro-Start battery from Pepboys. It has a quick charge max amp rate of 4 amps for 1 hr. .9 amps for 5-10 hr regular charges. The battery charger I bought (also at Pepboys) does 2 / 10 / 15 amps, reducing the charge rate as the battery nears full. Also has a bunch other features, along with checking the battery. So I just set it for 2 amps and let it do it's thing.

Charger cost me $20 and will also charge car batteries.
