Default Another question about checking the oil...

Should the engine be running to check the level? I overfilled mine and let out about .5 qt today and checked it. I ran it after I let the oil out and checked it again. It was inbetween the marks. I checked it again while it was running and it was a little lower. What are the PERFECT conditions under which I should check the oil? (balanced on its wheels obviously.. but running, off, etc.)
Thanks guys.

I could be wrong but i'm fairly certain you don't want it running. You should let it run long enough for the oil to warm up and become less viscous. This way more of it can settle in the viewing glass and give you a more accurate reading of how much is in there.

If i'm wrong on this one, feel free to flame me for giving bad advice.

Honda manual says to let it run for a few minutes, shut it off........let it sit for a few mins, then check it.

also check it while its balanced, or centered standing up. i grab mine by the pass. peg and the frame slider and center it up to check it.

also, the manual calls for 3qts, but if you put in 3qts that will over fill it. it should only take 2qts and maybe 1/2 of another.

i did it exactly how the manual said to. let it run for a bit, shut it off and let it sit for a few minutes, then check it.

I changed mine today. I put in 3 quarts and changed the filter. It was just above half way between the lines. So I agree 2 1/2 quarts is not enough.
