Default Ambitious (but maybe rubbish)

So, I've been kicking around the idea of painting my exhaust black (to continue the red/black theme of mi bike) But I have had a revelation.........

Black paint would scuff and chip.....and what I'm really looking for is a nice, deep satin black.........

So I was thinking (high temp powder-coat). But I want to do it myself. And the drawback is.....I don't have an oven large enough to bake it........or do I?

You need an oven set at 400 degree's for 20 minutes for the powder to bake.........but won't the exhaust get near to that temperature anyway? So why not powder the exhaust still on the bike, then run it for 20-30 minutes for the powder to bake? It seems so absolutely outrageous that it could quite possibly work.

I'm thinking I may need to measure the outside temperature of the can and mid pipe when I get home from work tomorrow.......it may just work.

Fox, I think that might work. Best bet is to get one of those gun style thermometers and make sure. It's definitely fathomable if you get a nice 80 degree day and you let it idle for a while.

The only downside I could see to this is the chance of dirt/debris mixing in with the powder after the ride. You wouldn't want bits of dirt to bake in there too!

well he could just turn the choke up and let it idle at like 3-4k rpm, but that would be a b*tch for whoever is nearby

a powder coat will only retain heat.... your exhast is going to get too hot... maybe just normal high temp paint would be best.

Fuel injected bikes don't have a choke.

they do have an idle adjuster, but its not a choke.

I foresee problems with this, not sure what exactly, but i just see problems.

I'd say your best bet would be multiple coats of Header (or brake caliper, or engine block) paint. The Powdercoat may retain heat, plus you definately want to have it off the bike when you do it.

A. You don't want the paint/powder/whatever you decide to use, to drip on other parts of the bike.

B. You don't want to need to Mask off other parts of the bike, and then have the masking catch fire while you try to use your engine's own heat to cure the coating.
