I think maybe you should start off on a pocket bike... if you are ok on that, step up to a moped. Master that, get a scooter... a nice vespa maybe. When you think you got that, try a 250 Ninja. If you still like it, then get an older 600. If your not dead yet, step up to a 900-1000....
But seriously, if you have never been on a street bike, before you go dropping mad money on something, take a MSF course that provides bikes, go through the course, get your license. Only you know what you can handle, we can't pick your bike for you. The CBR 600's are great starter bikes, they are forgiving and easier to ride then some others in their class. They are great all around bikes. But it's all about your ability, and self control (or lack thereof). Maybe consider picking up a deceint f3-f4 for less to get the hang of it. Just my .02

I rode for years on an old '75 Honda CB 550. Also screwed around on my dad's Harley Sportster 883. Even with all of that expereince, moving to the 600RR was a HUGE learning curve. If you respect the bike and what it can do it will respect you. If you make a big mistake on a bike like this though, it will bite back hard.

I got a 2005 600RR as my first bike but if I coudl do it over again I would have started smaller. I think you should listen to the others and start with something smaller adn then wrok your way up. The 600RR is a race bike and it acts like one. It would be better to start out small, work on your riding skills and progress up in bikes as your skills progress.
