Default 1st Bike

Hi All, first post, first question.
I'm newly licensed, never owned a bike, and very new to riding. Is it a bad idea to cut my teeth on a CBR600RR?
I was thinking used; maybe an '05 or '06.
Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.

First off, did you take the motorcycle safety course in your area? If not, then take it. I think it's best to start with a 250cc bike, but some do start out the riding hobby with a 600cc bike. I started out with a 250cc bike years ago and pretty much rode the road solo and with a lot of cruisers until I got more comfortable. Riding with the sportbike crowd is very different, unless you are with a bunch of new riders too. But I also learn a lot from riding with fast riders. Just take your time and respect the power of the bike if you do start on a 600cc bike because they are not as forgiving as a 250cc ones. A twist of the throttle on a 600 has way more power than a 250!!

Sounds reasonable, thanks for talking me down.
With that said, the SV650 seems like a good bike learn on. Maybe next year :-)

No reason not to get a 600 as your first bike. Plenty of reasons to not get a 250/500 or a 1000 as a first bike though.

I just took the MSF course and I've got a grand total of 20 miles of experience. What I don't want to end up with is a bike that I'll be reselling after only 1-2 months of riding because I outgrew it. I think any 250 would get old really fast. On the other side of the argument, I also don't want to be the douche bag that shows up with a brand new CBR 600RR that has zero skills and end up dropping it at a stop sign.

I'm with him^^^

Ride your ride at your pace. Don't be pressured into riding outside your comfort zone. Keep your head up, eyes open, and take your time learning how to really ride. Seat time is very important!!!! You'll be fine and have the time of your life.

I picked up an '08 Suz SV650s. It was little money so I figured what the hell.
Here's my advice and 20/20 hindsight. I should have gone straight to the CBR. After only 600 miles, I'm already outgrowing the SV.
