Sump removal 1999 CBR 600 FX
Hi people,
Any time-saving tips appreciated. I have to get the sump off my CBR for replacement / repair. Previous mechanic left the drain bolt threads stripped. I tried as a temporary repair to remake threads with liquid metal, but I think when I cleaned the thread with solvent, that thinned the oil lying in the bottom of the sump and created a running channel through my repair.. So the bodge didn't work! it seeps oil past my liquid metal seal.
It looks like there's not enough room to drop the sump off without removing the downpipes, but that looks like it'd require the rad to come off too? Or am I all wrong here. Could I slacken off the downpipes to allow them to drop out the way rather than removing them? and if so would be downpipe gasket be ok to just tighten up onto again?
Either that or does anyone have another idea for sealing the drain, short of a silicone type sealant (bad idea)? I know the best thing to do is remove, drill, tap and helicoil, but I really don't have the time /tools to do it. But if I could get the sump off easily I could have a machine shop fit the helicoil I'm sure, or drill it out and tap it for a larger drain bolt I guess.
Any time-saving tips here would be great.
best regards
F
