RE: removing headlight bulb
My CLYMER service manuel says that by taking off the air duct covers on the front fairing there should be sufficienctspace to change the bulb. After doing that, i assume by reaching into or under the front fairingyou would be able to undue the headlight wire connector andtake off the rubber dust cover thats located on the back of the headlight. Once those are off, you have to unhook the bulb retainer (the wire bracket that holds the bulb in the headlight) andafter thatthe bulb can be pulled straight out from the socket
Personally, I havent changeda headlightbulb this way so i wouldnt know how easy this method is. I changed mine when i had all my body panels off a month ago when i was changing my sparkplugsand obviously with everything apart it was a piece of cake. If its spacing is just too tight or its hard to see what your doing, you could take the entire front fairing off at which point you would have no problems. Doing this is not very difficult, just alot time spentunduingbody screws with an allen keyand remembering where you tookthem from.
Either way, it shouldnt be too bad and best of luck.

RE: removing headlight bulb
thanks Nsracing33,
just another question, i have some pretty small hands and im able to get to the plug, but how does it actually disconnect? i was trying to figure that out for about 15 min before i gave up! im sure its just a matter of pushing in a top or bottom tab???

RE: removing headlight bulb
Yes you are correct that with a stock setup, the headlight should always be on when the key is on. If you only have a light when you toggle the highbeams, it is likely the low-beam filiment in the bulb is burned out.
As far as removing the "nose section", hes refering to taking apart the front fairing (taking the entire front plastic assembly and headlight off the frame so that you can access everything properly.) It sounds like you were able to get the wiring and plastic seal on the back of the bulb disconnected already. Is this true? The wire connector should just pull straight out and the bulb retainer should come off by pushing in on it to unhook it, if i remember properly, it works on something like a hinge so once its off the bulb can come straight out.
brveagle, might be right that theres just not enough space to install an HID kit this way. I havent installed one personally so i dont know how much larger in size it is. Taking off the front fairing would allow you to do it all without having to trying to blindly navigate in a tight space. If you have a 99-00 F4 the front fairing can be fairly easly taken off after you unscrew both mirrors (they bolt through it onto the frame). Next onboth sides of the instrument panel there is a screw which needs to come out (under each of the hand levers). There is a very small screw in the middle which connects both pieces of trim, but its a real pain to acess and truthfully its so miniscule i dont think you need to actually unscrew it. Lastly there should be three screws connecting the front fairing to each side body fairing on each side of the bike. Once these are undone, make sure you have the headlight unit braced because it falls lose.I do notthink you have to completelytake off the side fairings, but if some molding is held down by them, they areeasily taken off by unscrewingapproximately three more screws on each side. Once everything is lose, you will have no problem installing it. Make sure you note where you took each screw from because it makes reassembly much easier. Doing it the first time might sound a little intimidating but truthfully its a good learning experience and its super easy once you understand how everything fits together
Anyway, hope this clears things up a little. If you get stuck, there might be a photo tutorial on the site somewhere although i dont see one popping out at me. I could also possibly upload pictures if needed. When i got my bike i bought the CLYMER service manuel for it which has step by step instructions with photos for virtually anything you might want to do. Definitly worth the $15. Whatever route you go, best of luck with it. If its already done, let us know how it looks. I just might put on an HID kit myself.

RE: removing headlight bulb
Well i did get the bulb out and disconnected today without taking any fairing off. Just had to unscrew this little hook thingy that is on the right side and it pretty much made enough room to pull it out and away.
Im waiting for the kit to arrive and once i get it ill let you guys know how it went, and get a pic up as well.
Thanks for all the info.
