i'd say the problem lies in the carbs. a cheap and simple thing to try is get some "sea foam" from an auto parts store and add some to your fuel for a couple tanks. also try cleaning the plugs. and if you are still having trouble get a compression test done and maybe adjust the valves. at 21k miles you are due for them and way over due at 55k miles. but use the sea foam and if that doesn't work, actually clean the carbs. the fact that your bike sputtered makes me think it's the carbs.

Seafoam regularly and u won't have carb probs. It sounds like carbs to me too. If u have never done a tune up (with valve adjustment) that may help. It is spring if ur the type to use stabil in ur tank for winter storage thats no good for ur carbs either. Seafoam is a better replacement for stabil as it cleans while removing moisture.

damn, it actually sounds like i knew what i was talking about... lol (by the way i do know what I was talking about cuz been there done that and it cost me ALOT of money). But for the record, you can use too much sea foam. 1/4 can every 4 or 5 tanks should be enough. once it's clean, it's fairly easy to keep clean.

I started a thread quite recently which was called "Horrible gas mileage after spark plug change'.
I installed new spark plugs but couldn't use my torque wrench that day so I winged it. I rode for week or two. My mileage was a lot worse and I also lost power (hitting the limiter much more than usual). One of the plugs was way too loose and I used my torque wrench this time. Every thing seems to be fixed. Maybe it's one of the plugs but if it's bogging, perhaps it's the carbs.. Both are easy to check though.
