Default For the petcock to be off

So I need to take my tank off and I don't want gas to go all over my cashmere carpet (my cbr deserves the best)! Which way to I point the long narrow end?

Even with it turned off, it is possible for it to leak out. Dont just rely on that to stop it all. The vent hose may leak too if you position the tank just right, and you WILL get gas leaking from the hoses when you take them off. Best bet is to stick a bolt in the hose from the petcock to prevent it from leaking out that way.

I still need to know which position is off... even if I do stick the bolt in there and not turn it off fuel is going everywhere

For it to be off, the lever needs to be sideways (narrow end in the middle). Keep the hose pointed up and then cap it. You will spill very little if any this way. I have taken the tank off my 600 prolly a good 20 times. Good luck!
