Default Oil???? Info for a newbie

Hi me again. Sorry for keep posting what are probably stupid questions but like I keep saying I'm new to all of this so please bare with me.

I changed the oil and filter at the weekend and followed the instructions in the manual. After replacing the filter and sump plug I filled it up as described which was to make sure the oil is between the lines in the windows. Then start the bike and let it run for a few mins, put it on the stand on flat ground and check the oil is still between the lines. I thought all went well and was very pleased with myself.
I have just got home from work which is about 10 miles and I thought I would check the oil again after a decent run. The oil is now well above the maximum line and above the window all together, after 20 mins it still hadn't dropped. Ive just checked it again after 2 hours and it still above the window. Have I filled it up too much and will it cause me problems if I have?

Thanks again for any replies.

How many quarts/letres did you put in? as long as its under 4qts. you're safe and it wont mess up the engine.

Thanks for the replies.
The bike was level and on the centre stand. I took it off the stand this morning and leant it over an inch or so and the oil dropped to the right level so I'm assuming it's not too full.

After a bit of maths I have worked out I put in less than 4 quarts. It was about 3.5 litres at the most so hopefully all should be ok.
