Ok what oil is best for my bike. Its a 1999 honda cbr 600 f4. And do i just fill it up untill it reaches the top of the sight glass or do i fill it till its just under the top of the sight glass. Im a car mechanic but im not used to doing this on a bike, just need to know what oil and how high to fill it up the sight glass thanks alot for everyones help :)

There are many different oils to choose from. Personally - I use Shell Rotella Diesel Oil 15W-40. It is JASO-MA oil, which is important. I don't know where you live, but it is called different things in different places.

As for the level, you need to make sure your bike is level. The manual says on the center stand but many bikes don't have it. You may have to stand it up and have someone look at the sightglass. I don't know about the F4, but my old kwacker has hi and lo oil level marks on the sightglass. I assume if it doesnt, you want the oil level near the top of the glass.

I personally go with honda HP4 (synthetic blend), alot of people here use the AMSOil and they seem to like it though. Owner's manual says to add 3.7 quarts if you're changing oil and filter. i buy 4 1 Quart bottles rather than the gallon jug.
what i would say is drain the oil , remove old filter, replace the new filter, put the drain bolt and its washer back (owner's manual recommend changing the washer with every oil change, i'd say just inspect if its still in good shape and flat), pour 3 of the 1 quart bottles, and the forth one pour about 2/3 of it and run the engine for 5 minutes. then inspect the oil level on the sight glass ( when the bike is upright, not on its side stand) and add up more oil to the middle of the sight glass

I'd say a lot of regular motorcycle dealers have the honda oil. That's where I get mine at least. Call around some local dealers.

Put in the recommended amount like you would on a car, then check the sight glass and you're likely good.
As for oil, it's whatever you're comfortable with. I use a lot of rotella synth and mobil 1 because it's relatively cheap. Some people will argue amsoil and other boutique oils that are $10/qt, but I think they're full of ****. To each their own.

I know there is a lot of controversy about which oil to use, but really why not use what your Honda manual recommends? SAE 10/40 is ok in my humble opinion as long as you live in a country which has the temperature range for this viscosity.. A lower (5/40) grade might be better in colder climates, but for most countries a SAE 10/40 is good enough. Who makes the oil is not really important as long as you get the correct viscosity. Don't waste money on fancy oils-it's not necessary.

Unless of course you put CAR oil in that has friction modifiers in it.

Then the clutch is toast.

Make sure the oil meets JASO-MA or JASO-MA2 to indicate it is safe for wet clutches.
