New Project
#11
With the events of this week the project has taken a slight turn. I discovered a website with Nicky Hayden's first AMA road race championship bike. He won the 1999 AMA Supersport Championship on a 1999 CBR600F4. So this is the direction I am now headed, to make a street legal tribute, rather than full replica, of that bike.
My plan is to still use the "race tail" I found that utilizes the stock seat, that way the bike will still be usable for daily riding. And rather than the offset, "endurance" style headlight, I am going to look at incorporating the current Yamaha R1 or R6 style headlights under the nose, next to the snorkels.
Here's a shot of his championship bike to show you where I am headed.

The basic front I'm going with is the CBR600F4 race nose (first pic), so the stock headlight is gone, replaced with the number plate area for Nicky's "69". My next problem is doing something about headlights so it's street legal here in the US. My potential solution is to use current Yamaha R1 headlights (pic 2) and incorporate them similar to the R1 with them mounted just center of the F4's snorkels. I went to our local Yamaha dealer and looked at them, and they should work with some slight modifications.

Definitely. Though it might become a winter project. Can't quite afford all the new bodywork just yet, plus I want to ride it some this season. So, right now I am working on sanding down all the current bodywork to for paint and doing all the cleanup on the electricals and such. Fortunately for me, I have a bike shop right next door where I can do the painting.

A few more pics of what I have to work with. A previous owner had installed both an alarm (long removed) and a scrolling "reader" license frame and really messed up the wiring for the rear signals. Plus there is a non-stock relay under the seat (visible in one pic) that I'm pretty sure is for the alarm that somehow connects into the main wiring harness. Not quite sure how I'm going to deal with that yet.

So, I got the majority of the bodywork sanded and prepped for primer (other than the front fender which requires removal of the wheel. Waiting on the front stand that my son-in-law has for the bike, hopefully by the end of day tomorrow.
Lowers are already primed and waiting on paint.
While I'm waiting I am going to take some time to give the bare bike a good cleaning cuz it needs it. Don't mind the messyness. The shop is another work in progress. It started life as a small stable that my dad built for a pony back when I was 5. Now it has 40+ years of auto parts and house hoarding that I have to eliminate.
