Ignition issues
I have a 2000 CBR600f4.I have owned it for 3 months .It ran great until I was travelling down a rough patch of road and all of the sudden my bike starts coughing sputtering,backfireing.I nursed it to the shop .where they told me I needed a wiring harness.I towed it home and pulled out the harness and it seemed fine .I checked each wire with an ohm meter and all are ok.
I have put it all back in and used dielectric grease at all the connections. I now have no spark,I measured 12 volts at the coils with the key turned on ,It will crank fine as a new battery was installed recently. I am awaiting a peak voltage adapter to arrive and I will be testing the pulse generator. If anyone can offer anything that might be of use,pls do. |
Well, sounds like you have a good start on it. Many ignition problems come from pulse generator / timing rotor issues. In the mean time make sure that the ICM is grounded good, and all other ignition related grounds are also good. You'd be surprised at how much of a problem that can be. With the peak voltage adapter you'll be able to check the peak voltage of the coils also. I'm curious as to what wire harness they told you was bad and why they thought that?

the mechanic moved some wires and it dies...so he says..

The only thing you can test is the coil peak voltage output. What harness was it? Maybe there's a small short somewhere. Did you check the pins in the connectors to see if any were loose or corroded or bent?

a stroke of luck
I stopped at the dealer yesterday and wanted to get the computer checked .
As I was going in I noticed the exact same bike pull into the parking lot. I convinced the owner to let me plug my computer into his bike. He was hesitant at first but let me do it. His bike fired right up and ran normal..so computer is ok...whew!!! I was then checking the wires to the comp.and found out the throttle position sensor wires were not conducting. I was confused because the wiring diagram shows the wires going directly from the sensor to the comp. I pulled out the harness again and found the wires were going to the ignition switch. That's where I'm at now ...I'll keep you posted as to the progress.. I get my peak voltage tester on Monday.. |
try the regulator rectifier I had simular problems and it was the rectifier

I replaced the pulse generator...the main wiring harness( mine was not that good)..still no spark..argh!!!
I'm gonna take it to the shop I'm no dummy when it comes to mechanics but this is really getting me stumped |
have you check the connection on the gauges. alot runs trough the connector
also acorrding to the wiring diagram one of the four wires coming from the coils is going in to the start/stop switch and starter switch and the same wire is also going in to the solenoid valve relay (exgirlfriend drop the bike on the left side and it screwed up the starter switch on the right side and i didn't have a head light) then another of the four wires goes to the fuel cut off relay and the fuel pump transfer relay. might want to check those connections |
problem located
it took all but 87 seconds for Super Dave to find my problem
turns out that my ignition switch is faulty continuity was ok when I checked it because it was a theft recovery,Dave says the ignition switch must have been damaged So he used another switch of a crashed bike...woo hoo... it fired right up I'm now in the process of ordering one up I'll be writing you all later when it arrives cheers Bob |
