Idle hunting

So my 600FY has a scorpion can and a K&N filter fitted. Bike was running a bit rough at low revs but fine once past 3k. Idle was a little erratic, maybe bouncing 100-200rpm max, so I decided to strip and clean the carbs. When I checked the mixture screws they were set differently, between 2 and 3 turns out.
Carbs are cleaned and I set the mixture screw to 2.5 turns out on all the carbs. When its cold it runs perfecty but once it starts to warm up the idle starts bouncing up and down about 400 rpm. Does this indicate rich or lean?
Any suggestions on an easier way to adjust the mixture screws would be great, they are a real PITA to get to.
