Ah........the search button is your friend here man.
There is a way to tell if you rotate the chain to it's tightest spot on the back of the sprocket and pull the chain off the sprocket. If you can pull it off a given distance ( I forget how much) it's shot.
I simply use it until it starts binding......meaning the links dont roll correct anymore when the chain is "dry". You'll be able to look at the chain and see it's not straight.......all the links will be kinked on it. That is when I replace mine. Usually around 20-25K before the stock one dies if it's taken care of.
As for cleaning...........you'll get a 1000 different answers. I use WD-40 to clean off the crap.......and Motul chain lube to lube it. It doesn't seem to fling off as much as the Honda stuff I used to use. Just how I do it........again........search and you'll find 100's of answers on HOW to clean your chain and WHAT to use to do it.
