A steering-stem socket is very handy but most diy'ers use the screwdriver-hammer technique to remove it. Just be careful. Upon reassembly, be sure to torque to proper spec. This is a safety issue.

Excellent, thanks for going to that trouble, very helpful, and really appreciate it.
Looks like the hardest part is to remove the old race.
We have access to a press, so pressing the new one on should be fine.
