fuel pump leaking fuel
 

Ok, my 2000 f4 is leaking fuel from the rubber breather-type hose connected to the fuel pump. When the bike is turned on it will sometimes dump some fuel out of the hose and after that it will just drip, will also drip when bike is off. Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this?

Some suggestions I have gotten:

1. change fuel filter.....did that, did not fix the problem

2. change fuel pump.....could this be the problem? I can do this myself but the part will cost me 180 bucks here in Canada so I would like some feedback.

3. float stuck/ carb problem. This is beyond my ability to take care of, unless a friend can help me, so then I will have to take the bike to a shop, again would like some feedback before I do this.

No one has any ideas? It would be nice to know where to start.....new fuel pump or carbs?

i think i might be able to help, im in the middle of replacing mine right now, when i ordered my new one the black cover, where the breather tube comes out of was cracked and had a chunk of plastic missing, looking inside of it, it didnt seem to have any direct connection to the actual fuel, i think the breather is just for the electric part of the pump. so when you say you have fuel coming out the breather it seems like a problem. id say you would have to replace the fuel pump. oh and why $180 dollars, no dealer up there? i got mine for $114

Um...so there should never be fuel coming out of that tube at all? Your probably right, bad fuel pump. I will perhaps try ebay (Honda does not sell motorcycle parts here...only a few shops and it is pretty pricey).

u sure its coming from the fuel pump? on my 99 the hose on the right side is for the "overflow" coming from the tank not the pump. follow the hose back to the source...maybe u already did that and possibly I didnt read it

My tank is not even on my bike right now, but yes the tank has a hose as well. My fuel pump has a line going into it (from the tank with a fuel filter in-between) a line going out to the engine, and a power line. Then in the middle bottom of the pump there is a line coming out attached to nothing...this is the one that drips fuel.

Update on this one:

Changed fuel filter....did not fix problem

Changed fuel pump today....initially I thought the problem was fixed (the fuel pump is no longer dripping out gas from the bleeder line).

However, now the bike is spitting out gas from somewhere in the middle of the bike...I can't tell where...perhaps from the carbs. (and it falls directly on the exhaust which is not safe I would think).

Does anyone have any thoughts of what the problem could be? Could this be a carb/ stuck float issue then? I have no idea what would cause the bike to be losing gas.

I really want this bike going by the time the snow melts up here.

mine did the same thing...it dripped gas right down the center of the bike under/around the carbs. you're not going to like what you hear but for me it was the o-rings that are on the tee-fittings between carbs 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 where the fuel supply lines connect. I had to split the carbs(2 nuts, 2 long bolts that go all the way through all 4 carbs), take em apart but be sure not to lose the springs between the throttle tabs where the sync adjustment is(phillips screw...zinc/gold in color). replace all o-rings between carbs. put back together(the throttle tabs can be a FRIGGIN BITCH but needle nose pliers help). finally sync those mothers and it should run like new.

That sounds pretty rough, definitely not an easy fix. I may have to bring my baby in. The shops that work on Honda's around here charge out at 110$/hr.....its going to hurt.

idk man, this is my first bike and it's also the first bike of any kind I've ever worked on. I never even touched carbs from anything until I got this bike...just don't let it psyche you out.
