fan fuse

fan fuse
On my way to work this morning in stop and go traffic I looked down and the temp gauge was in the red. I killed the motor, let it cool and babied it to work. The fan fuse was blown and when I put in the spare fuse the fan kicked on and quickly lowered the temperature.
Any thoughts on the cause? I will check for rubbed wires but might it be prudent to just replace the fan? In the 10 years I’ve owned this bike I’ve never replaced a fuse.
The bike has ~53k miles on. It sat for the last month or so but just returned from an epic 2-up 1000+ mile tour of Appalachia where it ran like a top. Prior to this summer it sat for 2+ years in our car port outdoors but under cover.
I don’t know how long it had been in the red but what I looking for in terms of motor damage? Is anti-freeze consumption is the most likely symptom of a larger problem?
thanks,
-morgan
