Cbr600F4 no response after rain

Hey, I am a new rider and also new to this forum. I bought my 2000 CBR600F4 a week ago and have ridden it ever since, I probably put around 30 kms on it.

Now, yesterday it started to rain and the bike was outside for a few minutes. After that I went outside and I put the the bike cover on. Now, there was some water all over the bike before I put the cover on.

Today I went to start the bike and there was still water on the bike (switches, tank, seat etc.) and seemed like the battery was a little weak(it has been like this since I bought it, sometimes it needs to be connected to another battery to get charged before I start it). So, I pushed the start switch and I knew that the battery needed a charge(the bike buzzed a bit). Instead of charging it like always, I went ahead and bump started it. It started on the first try and rode just fine. I rode for a few minutes and came back home. After I turned the bike off and tried starting it again, nothing happened. The engine didn't turn over and the bike lights didn't even get dimmer for a sec( because when the battery is low, the headlights go a bit dim to show that there isn't enough voltage). The headlights were fine and the horn worked fine too.

So, the starter button felt like it wasn't doing anything at all. What could be the problem here? Is the starter button toast? or could it be a fuse of some sort? (I checked the fuses and they all seem fine to me).

Thanks so much in advance.

yeah, first check all the connections in the wireharness from battery all the way up to the ignition, turn signal, and starter/ kill switch, take it apart and check the contact points. look for loose or corroded contact points. its all i got for now.

ps~also check the charging system wires, from stator to regulator/ rectifier to battery.

Could be a fuse mate give them a check

Thank you cBrentb and 500tie. It turns out that somehow the start button wire was disconnected (the 2 red plugs) and that is why it wouldn't turn on. Now I started the bike for a few minutes and it ran fine (on choke) and then as soon as I slowly let the choke off it and it shut down. So, I tried starting it again and no luck.... Eventually it started for a few secs but the rpm wouldn't go over 1500 (choke is still on, pulled)... And then it dies completely.

I checked my battery terminal and the voltage was 10.75 V . How much should it be normally. Do you think I should replace the battery? or could this be something else?

The bike also refused to bump start and I connected a battery to it, but it went uptil 10.85 and thats that, no more. And it wouldn't start.

Its been hardly a week with this bike and it is already giving me troubles... Is it worth keeping? or should I get rid of it. The previous owner isn't even picking up his phone and isn't telling me whats truly up with the bike.... THanks in advance.

Sounds like your reg/Rec has gone mate as that reading is a little low what is the reading when you rev the bike?

Mattson May 27, 2013 02:26 AM

Dont got an f4 but the symptoms are the same on all bikes, my guess goes to the r/r or battery, if its the rec your batt probably needs to.be changed too. the voltage when the ignition is turned off should be over 12v and when revving over 3500 it should go to somewhere like 14,4 but not much over that. The rec is really easy to change, in f2 it sits inside the right tail fairing, a little square-ish box with a connector and possible heat sink fins. Pull the connector and check for heat damage. Whatever it is it's def an electrical issue and shouldnt be too hard to fix when you zero in on what is at fault.

What mattson said is correct and the reg/rec on the f4 is in the tail just like his bike

Fryup2000 May 27, 2013 03:22 PM

Hope you sort it! Don't get too disheartened the f4 is a great bike. If the previous owner is dodgy you can sleep knowing he's going to hell!

Thanks for all the replies, you guys are great! :D

So here was the problem, the battery doesn't hold a charge at all. Even though it was changed last season and I have the receipts but seems like it is older. Don't know why...

I checked the voltage for it, I charged it over night with a 12V 1 Amp charger. And in the morning it was 12.24 V but it slowly decreased... But no worries it did start, but it would only run on choke (when it was pulled in). So not sure why that was. I drove it to the mechanics shop to get it checked and also wanted an inspection done. So we will see how that goes, I will keep you guys updated.

Also, is it normal for fornt to shake a lot? or could it be that I was riding on partial choke. (whenever I opened the choke fully, the bike would be fine, but when I would stop it would die on me. So i had to pull it when starting...)

Thanks again.

get a new battery, check the r/r. for the shaking, check the front wheel bearings, head stem bearing or a seized up caliper piston on front rotor.
