Default Bike cuts out while riding

My bike has been standing for just over 6 months, i was busy refurbishing it.

I replaced the fork seals, battery, serviced the breaks, new chain and sproket, new paint on plastics and frame. Then rode it to the mechanic to service and sort out a flat spot at 11'000prm and irregular idle.

They checked out the carbs which was super clean and the valve clearance was still 100%. The pump was faulty and they checked and replaced both fuel relays as well (apparently there is on in the front as well).

Problem is, the bike rides great for a while, like 30-50km then suddenly dies due to lack of fuel. Everything has been checked and even bypassed but still nothing. The bike will die on you then if we get it started will maybe ride for a kilometer then die again.

This is very strange and irregular, we cannot pinpoint the problem. I am waiting for the Auto-electrician to open in January so that they can check out the electronics.

Any suggestions?

Vacuum lock in the tank? There should be a tank breather that prevents a vacuum forming in the headspace of the tank. They get gummed up and don't work. Try riding with the tank cap off and some tape loose over the hole (allow it to breathe!).

Thanks. Will try that, I don't think they checked the breather.

SO after searching high and low we found the problem, it was definitely electrical and not a vacuum in the tank as the pump would not turn on at all. Mechanic told me it worked if he bypassed the relays and put power directly to the pump, i miss understood him thinking he said that did not work.

Long story short, the issue presented itself when i turned the handlebars and the entire bike died. The electronic fault was then quickly traced to a loose wire in the ignition that was arching against the frame. Strange that only the pump lost fuel power and nothing else. Will see if this really works.

Yes the loose wire was the cause of everything. She's been going strong ever since we fixed it without fail.

It's almost impossible to find a short. It takes a lot of time and patience and it's normally erratic it will be working when it shouldn't and will die at the worse times. Best it to start by checking all your connections on every inch of the loom and make sure that everything is properly grounded especially the rectifier both bolts need to be in.
It was just by luck that after 25 billable hours of looking I took the bike to a different guy and as we took it off the van and started it she died when we turned the wheel and he used that as his starting point.

Good luck 👍

Check your fuel pump points, the black cap comes off. I had this happen a few times, finally messed with it in my garage and listened to it. The points were wearing wrong and they got hot and would stick, thus not pumping fuel.
