Default Battery problems

Well here is the story....I bought the bike about 6 weeks ago and there were problems with the battery or so I thought. I gave it a full charge, it took about 3-5 hours to charge (I don't really remember). The battery was fine for 2 weeks and it was dead. I charged it up again and dead after a week. So I'm beginning to think its the rectifier (spelling?) or alternator. Now the battery takes about 30 minutes for a "full" charge but still won't start the bike or will start it once and that's it. So I'm curious if it's the battery, something else or both? I'm going to get the battery tested tomorrow. How much is it to have the rectifier or alternator replaced?

Thanks for the help.

Default RE: Battery problems

I got the battery tested and it was dead so I bought a new one. It's been charged and the bike started right up, however, I adjust the choke and let the bike warmup and went to take off and it stalled. So I tired to start it again and the rpm's went up the 3k and slowly dropped off until it stalled again and now it won't start. Any ideas? I have a full tank of gas.

Yes sir could be your Stator or your alternator,
you can check it yourself (output of both if you have a multimeter and consult a F4 guide to see the correct output levels)
If you don't have the tools or know how yourself most mechanics won't hit you for too much to have the electrical system checked)
Then at least you'd know what you were dealing with.
Hopefully this helps you , and GO HONDA!

Once again check that alternator or maybe just an issue between it (wiring) between it and your battery) especially if you have a new one.
Also when you say it "won't" start again, is it a weak cranking or strong but just won't start. Trying to rule out fuel pump, choke, issues as well.
Let me know the symptoms and I'll consult / pick my mighty brain for more troubleshooting options

GO HONDA!

Well it does start but stalls after a couple seconds. I'm going to see if I can tell if the fuel pump is the problem. I was told a possible vacuum leak.

The cranking seems pretty strong. At this point the battery isn't an issue. Right now the weather isn't good and I'm busy with work so I probably won't get to it until Sunday but I will try it again to see what happens and I post after that. How about bad plugs?

Yeah Plugs are another option, if the bike is flooding due to some carb issues, etc.
Your plugs may be fouled and the symptoms you describe would follow fouled plugs as well.
When's the last time you had the carbs cleaned? Keep me posted as I really do want to help
as best I can via cyber talk.

Good Luck

I went out and tried to start it last night and after one try of a little sputter and then stall it started right up the second time. I rode it for a few miles and everything was fine. Hopefully I don't have any problems but only time will tell. I'm guessing it may have been too flooded but in that case the plugs would be in trouble. I found out that to the best of the knowledge of the previous owner the carbs have never been cleaned. The previous owner is someone I know and is very trustworthy. The bike has almost 17k miles on it. Should the carbs been cleaned. It has good response. Under 6k rpms it doesn't have the greatest power but once I get over that it hauls. Is this normal? If it is, i'm guessing the bike makes all of it's power from 6k or 7k to redline of just before redline? Thanks for the help.

I have a CBR600fy, the power really comes on after the 7-8000rpm mark, I have a 33bhp restrictor kit fitted to mine, so I don't get much above 9000 usually. The most i've had is 11000 ish in 3rd gear which takes some doing and a fair stretch of road lol. But I can feel it's got the power there till the restrictor gets in the way of my fun [:@] lol.
